A Campbell Scientific weather station, installed on the back of theSphinx in May of 1990, provided environmental data needed for therestoration and preservation of the ancient structure. Parametersmeasured by the station include wind speed and direction, airtemperature, relative humidity, and precipitation. Data after ayear of monitoring indicated greater fluctuation in relativehumidity and air temperature than had been expected. The stationalso measured higher-than-expected wind speeds and helped identifynorthwest winds as the main source of wind erosion.
